Nigerian VAT

Making tax legible for small traders

An explainer built to demystify tax payment and VAT calculation for small businesses in Nigeria.

I took a deliberately minimal approach to design and animation. The subject is serious and the audience is not a design audience, so every decision was made to keep the message in front and the technique behind it.

The cultural detail did the heavy lifting on relatability: Madam Titi, our lead character, in Ankara, standing in the kind of small storefront the film was actually addressing. The colour palette stayed restricted and pulled from the Nigerian flag, which kept the piece official-looking without turning it cold.
